EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN!

The oldest community in mainland SA has the newest historical society!

The Glenelg Historical Society, an incorporated, not for profit association, will actively engage community interest and intends to develop a philanthropic attitude for the promotion of Glenelg’s history and built heritage.

Glenelg has always enjoyed a tourism focus on its historic origins, but an active community history association can ensure the continuing importance of heritage and history in an era of changing dynamics. We have to get away from the misconception that history is boring.

History connects people and communities and can offer an exciting thrill of the chase, as you travel back through time. Every generation builds on the past it has inherited, and then creates a new past for the next generation.

The term carbon footprint is a topical buzz word for our age, but the bigger picture is our history footprint. If our community doesn’t take steps to remember, interpret, appreciate and preserve our past then we leave future generations exposed and vulnerable because they have been denied the building blocks for their future.

The Glenelg Historical Society is planning an active programme of events, dinners, guest speakers and excursions. Membership is open to anyone interested in Glenelg’s history.

Membership Application forms are available on this site or the Glenelg Historical Society Facebook page.
